Visual support: I need a break

Knowing you need a break and being able to ask for one are two separate skills. Many autistic and neurodivergent students reach overload quickly in busy classrooms but do not have a reliable, low-effort way to signal that or a clear picture of what happens next, so the moment tips into shutdown or outburst before anyone acts.

These picture cards make the break sequence visible and predictable: one card for asking, one for each step of taking the break, and one for returning. Put them in a small strip on the student's desk or the break corner wall. The student can point to a card, hand it over, or follow the strip without having to find words in a hard moment.

Tips for using it

  • Keep the 'I need a break' card separate and within easy reach at all times, not only in the break corner.
  • Walk the student through the full sequence once when they are calm, not in the middle of a difficult moment.
  • Pair the 'calm down' card with whatever strategy that student already uses, such as headphones or a fidget.
  • Agree in advance how long a break lasts and add a visual timer so the wait feels bounded.

Common questions

How many cards does a break sequence need?

Four to six covers most classrooms: ask, go to spot, wait or calm down, and return. You choose four, six or eight cards before generating, so you can trim the sequence for a student who needs fewer steps.

Can I change the words to match what we already say?

Yes. Type the exact words your class uses, such as 'quiet corner' instead of 'break spot', and those words appear on the cards. One word or short phrase and one image per card.

What if one card does not match our setup?

Any single card can be relabelled or redrawn. Regenerate just that card with different wording or a different image prompt and it will match the rest of the set in style.

How do I get the cards into the classroom?

The set downloads as a printable PDF. Print, cut, and laminate. Many teachers attach a strip to the student's desk with hook-and-loop and put a matching strip in the break corner.
