Visual support: Animals

Learning animal names alongside spoken language, books, and busy classroom displays can overwhelm autistic and neurodivergent students. When too much is happening at once, the word and the creature stop connecting, and a student who knows what a lion is may not be able to retrieve the word when asked in a group.
These picture cards give each animal its own card with one clear image and one word, nothing else competing for attention. Pin them on a wall display, use them in matching games, hand one card to a student who needs a prompt to join a conversation, or send a set home so the vocabulary travels between school and home.
One word and one clear picture a card, in your own steps, ready to print in minutes.

Tips for using it
- Group cards by habitat or size if your class topic has a specific angle, such as farm animals or ocean animals.
- Use the cards as answer choices: hold up two and ask the student to point rather than recall the word cold.
- Let students sort the cards into categories themselves as a low-pressure activity that builds vocabulary without a right-or-wrong pressure.
- Send a matching set home so families can use the same words and images during everyday conversations.
Common questions
Can I choose which animals appear on the cards?
Yes. You type the animal names you want and the set is built around exactly those. Many teachers generate one set for a class topic and a second smaller set for a student who needs a shorter list.
How many cards can I make in one set?
You choose four, six or eight cards before generating. Four works well for students who are just starting to build vocabulary; eight suits a broader topic unit.
Can I change one card without redoing the whole set?
Yes. Any single card can be relabelled or redrawn, so if one image is unclear or a student has a strong association with a different picture, you can update that card alone.
What format do the cards come in?
The set downloads as a printable PDF, one word and one clear image per card, consistent in style across the set. Print, cut, and laminate for repeated classroom use.
