Visual support: Fruits of the week

Learning new vocabulary is harder when the words arrive without a stable visual anchor. Many autistic and neurodivergent students need to see a word and its matching image together, consistently, before the word sticks. A list read aloud once, or a picture that changes between sessions, breaks that process before it starts.
Each card in this set pairs one fruit name with one clear, simple image so students can match, sort, point and name without relying on memory alone. Pin them to a word wall, lay them on the table for a matching game, or hand a card to a student who needs a moment to find the word they want. Swap the fruits out each week to build the vocabulary set gradually.
One word and one clear picture a card, in your own steps, ready to print in minutes.

Tips for using it
- Keep the cards on a low word wall so students can point to a fruit when they want it at snack or lunch time.
- Use the same cards across every activity in the week, including matching games, sorting by colour and tasting sessions, so the image stays consistent.
- Let students carry a personal copy of the week's two or three new fruit cards rather than showing the whole set at once.
- Swap one or two cards out each week rather than replacing the whole set, so familiar fruits stay visible alongside new ones.
Common questions
How many fruit cards will I get?
You choose four, six or eight cards before generating. Four suits a single week of focused vocabulary; eight works well for a longer unit or a class display.
Can I use fruits that are common in my region?
Yes. Type the fruit names you want and the cards are drawn for exactly those. If a student knows a fruit by a local name, use that name when you type it.
What if the image for one fruit is not clear enough?
Any single card can be redrawn or relabelled without redoing the whole set. Type a note describing what you need and generate that card again.
Can these cards be used for communication as well as vocabulary learning?
Yes. A student who finds it hard to say or recall a fruit name can point to the card instead. Many teachers laminate a small personal set for this reason alongside the class display.
