Visual support: Food and drink

Mealtimes and food choices involve fast, spoken language in a busy environment. Many autistic and neurodivergent students find it hard to name what they want, understand what is on offer, or communicate a preference when words do not come quickly under pressure.

These picture cards give each food or drink its own card with one word and one clear image, so students can point, hand over a card, or match a card to a real item. Use them at lunch, during cooking activities, or as a choice display so students can communicate without needing to find the spoken word in the moment.

Tips for using it

  • Include only items actually available in your setting so students are not pointing to something they cannot have.
  • Laminate cards and attach hook-and-loop fastening so students can hand one to an adult or place it on a choice board.
  • Pair a drink card with the hand-washing steps cards so the sequence from washing to drinking is clear.
  • Add a blank card for a food the student eats at home that is not in the set, and write the word together.

Common questions

How many cards can I make in one set?

You choose four, six or eight cards before generating. A smaller set works well for very young students or those just building vocabulary; a larger set suits a class display or a student who is ready for more choices.

Can I use the cards for a student who does not yet read?

Yes. The image carries the meaning and the word sits beneath it for incidental learning. You can also hide the word with a strip of paper if you want a picture-only card.

What if the image does not match the exact food we use?

Any single card can be redrawn or relabelled. Type the specific brand name or description you need and the image will be redrawn to match more closely.

Can I print these as a choice board for the canteen or lunch table?

Yes. Print the cards, laminate them, and mount them in a row or grid at the student's eye level. They work equally well as a standalone choice display or slotted into an existing choice board frame.
